About the HSE in general

A career that makes a difference

The Health and Safety Commission (HSC) is responsible for health and safety regulation in Great Britain. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local government are the enforcing authorities who work in support of the Commission.

Our mission is to protect people’s health and safety by ensuring risks in the changing workplace are properly controlled. We look after health and safety in mines, factories, farms, hospitals, schools, offshore gas and oil installations. We are responsible for the safety of the gas grid, the movement of dangerous goods and substances, and many other aspects of protecting workers and the public.

One of our most important and high-profile areas of work is ensuring the safety and security of nuclear installations.
