Human Factors Consultants

ERS (www.nuclear-energy.co.uk) and HSE (www.HSENuclear.co.uk) are seeking to appoint Human Factors Consultants, who are interested in working within the Nuclear Inspectorate (NII) as an Inspector, advising and guiding the worlds biggest construction and Engineering Consulting groups, Design Houses, Site Owners and Developers and Operators in the new build programme for Nuclear Power Plant Stations in the UK.

Gloucester / Liverpool / London

The Human Factor Consultant position entails:

i, managing and participating in a wide variety of UK and human factors consultancy projects attending clients sites within the nuclear and defence sectors;

ii, building client relationships including (as a regulator) with all related nuclear and other major hazard companies, government bodies and agencies.

Key Responsibilities

Projects range from HF analyses in support of safety cases, audits and evaluations, through to complex HF research and development projects and delivery of Human Factors training, prepare and deliver presentations and other marketing materials (e.g. brochures), contribute to Human Factors approach to improving business strategy and plans for future projects.

One of the greatest drivers is the developing, maintaining and strengthening of excellent client relationships, so this is a strong interpersonnel /client facing skills role). This is achieved through informal networking, formal meetings and conferences and by monitoring and being au fait with any developments and advancements in the HF field.

Essential Qualifications

Relevant undergraduate academic qualification in an appropriate field; i.e. Psychology or suitable Engineering Degree (Industrial, Mechanical or Electrical (C&I)); plus additional post-graduate Degree, training, or experience in Human Factors.

Member of the Ergonomics Society, BPS or suitable Engineering Chartership (or eligible for Membership).

Clean UK Drivers Licence.

Desirable Qualifications

Eligibility for UK DV clearance is beneficial.

Experience Required

To be successful in this role you will already have an understanding of a broad range of human factors principles and methods, and their role and application within various industries, particularly nuclear. You will need well-developed project management, commercial and business development skills. 

Project management training and/or experience is highly desirable.

Good technical report-writing ability and presentation skills are also essential.

 

Experience in one or more of the following technical areas is essential:

• Incorporating human factors into safety cases and periodic safety reviews

• Organisational issues including safety culture assessment and enhancement, and management of change

• System, equipment and interface design

• Early human factors analysis and human factors integration

• Human error and reliability assessment

• Design of training and procedure systems

• Root cause analysis, incident investigation, operational experience of systems.

A previous technical leadership role is beneficial.
